So you’ve bought your first set of private number plates and you’re eager to mount them onto your car but you’re not sure about the legality of private plates – how do you avoid breaking the law when displaying your plates?
Here’s CompareNumberPlates.co.uk’s top five tips on avoiding being pulled over and having your wrist slapped.
- Make sure that the plates are being produced by a company that’s on the DVLA’s Register of Number Plate Suppliers (all of our suppliers are).
- Make sure that the typeface, font, size and spacing are all correct – for more detailed information, click on these guidelines for legal number plates.
- However great the temptation (or whatever your friend says) don’t try and mess with the spacing and fixtures. There’s an on the spot £60 for anyone caught trying to misrepresent their plates – and the fine could run to £1,000 if you’re caught again! The registration number may even be confiscated.
- Make sure that the company that you buy your plates from ask for all the right documentation – that way you can sleep a little better at night knowing the plates are genuine and you’re not breaking any laws.
- Don’t choose a plate that’s guaranteed to grab the attention of the police (see below) – having to take all your documents down to the police station once a week isn’t fun for anyone!
If in any doubt, read the DVLA guidelines on number plates.
