How to buy a registration plate

Thousands of motorists now have a private registration plate – they’ve never been so popular. But with literally millions of registration plates for sale at any time, it can seem like a minefield.

So how do you figure out what to buy, and where from?

Whatever your budget, there are a few things to think about:

  1. Check the company you are buying from is reputable.
The company you use should be a member of an accredited organisation, like the CNDA.
  2. Decide how much you want to spend
Work out your budget, and then see what you can buy for that money. Be realistic though – popular names and letters will cost more. And dateless number plates can’t be bought for the same price as a prefix style or current style registration plate.
  3. Compare similar number plates
Get an idea of what your money can buy by comparing similar number plates. Prices can vary widely, but by looking around you can soon get a feel for what is a reasonable asking price. Take a look at the different styles of UK number plates to help you work out how to compare them.

You can transfer a number plate yourself, with the DVLA. If you use the services of a Company, however, you can be sure that you don’t succumb to any of the potential pitfalls.

Buying a private registration plate can seem complicated. But a good, reputable company will answer all your questions and take care of the transfer for you.
